A festive atmosphere in the steel hall of the German Occupational Safety and Health Exhibition (DASA) and happy faces among 26 graduates of Fachhochschule Dortmund: The academic anniversary celebration on Tuesday, 28 November 2023, was the highlight of the university year and honored 26 outstanding student achievements.
"You have learned, researched and lived at our university of applied sciences. You have dealt with your subject in enormous depth," praised Prof. Dr. Tamara Appel. The Rector emphasized the great commitment of the students. "With the skills you have acquired with us, you will develop solutions for the challenges of our time and strengthen the peaceful and free exchange of science." Celine Carstensen-Opitz, Chairwoman of the Sponsoring Society of Fachhochschule Dortmund and member of the Board of Management of VOLKSWOHL BUND Versicherung, also had words of praise: "The theses reflected the diversity of topics at Fachhochschule Dortmund.
For the best Bachelor's and Master's theses in each Faculty, the Fördergesellschaft honored: Luisa Bebenroth (Design), Alexander Block & Sven Walter (Faculty of Applied Social Studies), Rica Grünebaum (Business Studies), Aron Hemmis (Information Technology), Clemens Kurzeya (Computer Science), Felix Smyrek (Mechanical Engineering), Fabian Teschke (Electrical Engineering) and Christian Väth (Architecture). In their words of thanks, students praised the personal and competent support from the teaching staff at Fachhochschule Dortmund, the modern technical equipment and the culturally diverse and respectful cooperation. "You never had the feeling that you were just a student number in a larger system," said one award winner.
Research and teaching award
The Fördergesellschaft supports application-oriented teaching and research and recognizes work that solves specific problems and improves processes. Prof. Dr. Nicole Knuth(Opens in a new tab) from the Faculty of Applied Social Studies(Opens in a new tab) received the 2023 Research Award. For ten years, she has been continuously researching children and young people in residential care, in particular their opportunities for co-determination and support for families. "Our projects have contributed, for example, to municipalities being legally obliged to set up ombudsman offices for parents and children and to strengthening the self-representation organization of those affected," says the scientist.
The prize for excellent teaching went to Prof. Dr. Thomas Felderhoff(Opens in a new tab) from the Faculty of Information Technology(Opens in a new tab) . His lectures are not only understandable, but also fun, praised the students. He is able to convey complex theoretical concepts in an understandable way. He takes his time, is always approachable and shows a genuine interest in the students' concerns. "His trust in us motivates us to go beyond our limits and develop further in a self-determined way," said the student council.
