Student Visa & funding for international students

Many international students opt for a blocked account to finance their studies in Germany. The blocked account is so called because the sum, the amount you transfer to it in advance, is blocked until you have entered Germany.

You can open a blocked account online from your home country or in person in Germany. One option is to open a blocked account with Deutsche Bank, Fintiba, through Coracle's website or Expatrio's website. These blocked accounts are currently recommended on the "Studying in Germany(Opens in a new tab) " page.

As an alternative to the blocked account, you can also present a declaration of commitment to the Immigration Office (Bürgerdienste International in Dortmund), e.g. from your parents. The Immigration Office will check whether you actually receive money on a regular basis from the person who signed the declaration of commitment. The Immigration Office will also check whether the money you receive is sufficient.

At the latest when you renew your residence permit, you must submit the bank statements for the last few months (usually 3 months in arrears). This is considered proof that you have been receiving regular remittances.

Please note that not every immigration office accepts a declaration of commitment and that you may have to open a blocked account as proof of financing! Please inform yourself in advance at the responsible immigration office.
