Schoolgirls on an exploratory tour on Girls' Day

Published

The pupils were able to cast their own name badges using a liquid aluminum alloy.

Whether metal casting, 3D printing, programming or solving puzzles in the escape room: young prospective students once again gained exciting insights and had plenty of opportunities to try things out for themselves at Girls' Day at Fachhochschule Dortmund.

The nationwide day of action on April 25, 2024 once again gave schoolgirls the opportunity to gain practical experience in subjects related to mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology (STEM). The Faculties of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science had prepared several offers in workshops and laboratories.

  • The participants worked up a particularly sweat in the production technology laboratory(Opens in a new tab) , where they were able to cast their own personal name badge - using a liquid aluminum alloy at over 700 degrees. They had previously made the model for the casting mold using a 3D printer.
  • Individual souvenirs of Girls' Day were also created using 3D printers in the women's project lab(Opens in a new tab) , where the schoolgirls designed their own key rings, among other things. They were given inspiration and background information during a guided tour of the additive manufacturing lab(Opens in a new tab) .
  • The participants worked on other creative objects, such as a miniature Eiffel Tower, in the FabLab(Opens in a new tab) . Here, the students also familiarized themselves with tools such as laser cutters, cutting plotters and 3D printing pens.
  • The Lean Lab(Opens in a new tab)  was more playful, this time serving as an escape room for which the employees had devised a scenario. In order to successfully leave the lab, they had to solve all the puzzles relating to the optimization of production processes within an hour.
  • Blinking LED robot eyes controlled the participants at the Faculty of Computer Science(Opens in a new tab)  - with code they had written themselves. PhD students Jessica Swoboda and Catharina Beckmann and Prof. Dr. Gabriele Kunau, among others, got them interested in programming. There was also the challenge of steering a robot ball through a real obstacle course using an app.

New date for prospective students
