The library and its contribution to sustainability at Fachhochschule Dortmund

Published

From October 24 to 27, 2022, the topic of sustainability, in particular the energy aspect, was the focus of a themed week at Fachhochschule Dortmund. During the Sustainability Week, a wide range of lectures, discussions, workshops and hands-on activities were on the agenda to inform, motivate and encourage people to rethink.

Of course, this was also supported by the library, which - not least in view of its inherently sustainable basic concept - sees itself as having a responsibility to make the university of applied sciences even more resource-conserving, environmentally and climate-friendly. Sustainability was therefore the central theme of activities on the library's Instagram channel(Opens in a new tab)  from October 24 to 28.

As part of this, a selection of suitable literature was presented both on site and digitally to support interested parties from all faculties in (self-)study, teaching and research on sustainability topics and to show the wide range of sustainability-related topics. The theme week was also used as an opportunity to introduce a completely new library service: The loan of electricity meters (more information here(Opens in a new tab) )!

For all those who do not (yet) follow the library on Instagram, could not be on site during the sustainability week and/or prefer the pure text form, here is an overview of the content covered during the theme week:

Instagram

On our Instagram channel, we dealt with a specific aspect of the large, complex topic of sustainability every day of the week. We focused on the areas that are particularly relevant for our library and libraries in general.

On site and on our website

Outside of Instagram, the focus was on our literature tips. At the Emil-Figge-Str. 44 and Sonnenstraße locations, our users were able to browse through a selection of literature on sustainability topics on special shelves and themed tables throughout the entire Sustainability Week. All of the media on display were also available to borrow.

We sorted our selection of literature thematically into the following key areas:

  • Sustainable building & living
  • Sustainability in design & art
  • Sustainable energy
  • Sustainability through digitalization?
  • Sustainable mobility
  • Sustainability in society
  • Sustainable economy

You can search for further (printed and electronic) literature on these topics using our RiO literature search engine(Opens in a new tab) . Of course, it is possible that we do not yet have certain media on these topics in our collection. In this case, UAS members are welcome to submit an acquisition proposal via the online form (Opens in a new tab) .
