Information technology is at the interface between electrical engineering and computer science. The Master's study program focuses on how modern information technology processes and systems can be used to maintain or restore health and provide support in everyday life. This includes medical issues as well as assistance systems and sports and fitness applications.
Profile of the study program
Biomedical information technology deals with questions such as
- How can wearables be implemented and medically utilized?
- How can robotics be used in the operating theater or in the field of assistance systems?
- How can diseases be detected or even predicted at an early stage using big data?
- How can artificial intelligence support doctors in their daily work?
Project-oriented, interdisciplinary and networked
The course is interdisciplinary, application and project-oriented. The standard period of study is four semesters. In the first three semesters, the course includes both compulsory and compulsory elective modules and two projects as well as a Master's thesis in the fourth semester.
The compulsory modules cover the fundamentals of mathematics and systems theory as well as measurement technology, signal and image processing and artificial intelligence. There is always a close connection to specific applications with a medical background. Generally valid information technology concepts are taught and illustrated using the example of innovative applications with an interdisciplinary character.
In the compulsory elective modules, you will delve deeper into specific topics or areas. Possible areas of specialization include machine learning, robotics, human-machine interfaces or rehabilitation technology. In the project work, you will work independently, but in competent and committed teams, on topics of your choice. The Master's thesis in the fourth semester concludes the course. The thesis can be carried out as part of a research and development project or in cooperation with commercial enterprises.

The Master's degree program in Biomedical Information Technology is an admission-free study program, but there are admission requirements that must be met.
(1) The prerequisite for admission to the Master's degree program is the completion of a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Engineering or Diplom-Ingenieur*in degree at a university of applied sciences or university or in a corresponding accredited Bachelor's degree program at a university of cooperative education with an overall grade of at least "good" (2.5). This includes degrees
a) in biomedical engineering or
b) Medical Informatics or
c) Computer Science
d) Digital Technologies or
e) Electrical Engineering or
f) Information Technology or
g) Information and communication technology or
h) mechanical engineering or
i) orthopaedic and rehabilitation technology or
j) a comparable medical, scientific or engineering Bachelor's study program or
k) a study program marked accordingly in the transition matrix from Bachelor's to Master's study programs at the Ruhr Master School of Applied Engineering. The transition matrix can be accessed via the degree program finder at www.ruhrmasterschool.de.
The study programs must have a standard period of study of at least six semesters or 180 credit points.
(2) The decision as to whether a study program is classified as comparable in terms of content is made by a three-member committee consisting of the head of the study program and two other persons from among the professors of the Faculty of Information Technology.
(3) The Faculty Council of the Faculty of Information Technology determines which Bachelor's study programs of the Ruhr Master School have access to the Master's program in Biomedical Information Technology. These are identified in the transition matrix of the Ruhr Master School. The transition matrix is accessible via the degree program finder on the Ruhr Master School website.
