What is it about?

Logistics connects companies in global networks. In Germany, logistics is the third largest economic sector after the automotive industry and trade. The aim and task of logistics is to provide customers with materials and products in the right quantity, at the right time, in the right place and in the right quality. This must not only be highly efficient and cost-optimized, but also sustainable. The classic activities of logistics, such as transportation, storage and handling, are particularly visible to the outside world. But logistics is much more than that. Logistics is the engine of the global economy; it plans, manages and controls the supply chains for the global exchange of goods and services.

Many of the challenges for companies and society that are currently being discussed, such as supply disruptions and supply uncertainties, the effects of globalization, rising prices, climate change and opportunities, as well as the challenges of digitalization, have been issues that logistics has been dealing with for several years. By using digital technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence and simulations, logistics is showing how value chains will function more efficiently and better in the future.

Dortmund has established itself as a German science hub for logistics. Here, the Bachelor's degree program "Business Logistics" trains the sought-after specialists and managers for logistics and supply chain management in a strong network of companies and research institutions.
