Biomedical Technology - Medical Engineering
Biomedical engineering is an important, future-oriented high technology that contributes to people's health and to increasing efficiency in the healthcare system through close multidisciplinary cooperation between engineers, scientists and doctors.
Patient-specific diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and, in particular, individualized surgery are already of great importance today and will continue to be so in the future. This focus is underlined by the High-Tech Strategy 2020 for Germany published by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in July 2010.
Future project: better treatment of diseases with individualized medicine
"The individualization of medicine is a major challenge for health research, the healthcare system, healthcare provision and the healthcare industry. It can not only enable more effective therapies with less stressful side effects for patients, but also open up potential for better healthcare and lead to new business models for companies."
With patient-specific simulations, operations can be planned in advance and optimized with regard to biomechanically relevant parameters. The attending physician is thus provided with a further "tool" for determining his individual treatment strategy.
