How do companies find suitable employees from abroad, and how can they help them successfully transition into the workforce? That was the focus of “Welcome Skills Dortmund,” co-organized by Fachhochschule Dortmund and Arts.
The shortage of skilled workers and labor poses major challenges for many businesses. As a result, attracting international skilled workers is becoming increasingly important for Dortmund and the entire region. In this context, companies, experts, and institutions gathered at Dortmund City Hall on June 9 to share experiences and develop new ideas for successfully recruiting skilled workers and integrating them into the labor market.
A Look at the Job Market
Prof. Dr. Axel Plünnecke of the German Economic Institute highlighted the importance of international skilled workers for the regional labor market. In the discussion that followed, business leaders from Dortmund shared their experiences with recruiting and employing international staff.
Two employees described their personal journeys, from their arrival in Germany through the recognition of their degrees to their successful entry into their professions.
Firsthand
A key focus was on direct dialogue. At several expert roundtables, professionals from government agencies, professional associations, educational institutions, and labor market organizations provided information on key topics.
Participants received information on visa procedures, recognition of degrees, language support, and counseling and support services. Many discussions highlighted how important clear pathways, quick coordination, and good cooperation are for successful integration.
Needs and Solutions
Surveys and discussions highlighted the obstacles faced by immigrants and businesses. Among other things, participants identified information gaps, difficult transitions between different agencies, and barriers to access in the areas of employment and recognition. At the same time, it became clear just how valuable the experience and skills of international professionals are to Dortmund.
Participants agreed that many immigrants are already meeting the demand for skilled workers, starting businesses, creating jobs, and strengthening the city’s innovative capacity.
Growing Dialogue
The participating partners aim to expand dialogue between businesses, institutions, and international professionals. The goal remains to create an open city that welcomes talent from around the world and offers them promising opportunities.
The event took place as part of a project to improve arrival structures in Dortmund. The European Union’s Asylum, Migration, and Integration Fund (AMIF) is funding the initiative. The project supports immigrants as they settle in Dortmund.
“Welcome Skills Dortmund” was organized by Fachhochschule Dortmund, MigraDO, Dortmund Economic Development Agency, Regional Agency Westphalian Ruhr Area, Municipal Integration Management NRW, Dortmund University of Technology, and the International School of Management.
