UAS members declare: "We need academic libraries!"

Published

With the campaign "Weiter Wissen. With us." campaign, the German Library Association (dbv) aims to highlight the important role academic libraries play in society. Posters, flyers and social media posts highlight the variety of tasks and services offered by academic libraries and their relevance for research, teaching and science.

Testimonials, i.e. statements by researchers, students and other people in which they explain why they believe academic libraries are indispensable, are an important part of the campaign. The library at Fachhochschule Dortmund, itself a member of the dbv, asked around at the university and collected statements from various members of the university - from students, lecturers and administrative staff to the rector and chancellor. On the one hand, the interviewees emphasize the easy and free access to reliable, up-to-date and well-founded specialist literature for research, teaching and studies. On the other hand, they also see the library as an important physical place for learning, inspiration and discovery. In addition, academic libraries also support them in publishing, in non-academic work with students and in opening up new worlds.

The statements were gradually published on the library's Instagram channel(Opens in a new tab) . In addition, posters in the library support the campaign.

The library would like to thank everyone who commented. For those who don't use Instagram, the statements can be read again here. A small note on this: The term "academic libraries" refers to all libraries that focus their collections and services primarily on research, teaching and studies. It does not include, for example, municipal or community libraries that focus on leisure literature and fiction.
