Digital methods in architecture

Fast facts

About the teachingarea

The global spread of modern information technology is constantly influencing and changing our daily lives. Alongside culture and business studies, architecture is not unaffected by this development and is therefore under considerable pressure to change.

But how will architects design, plan and build in the future? What influence will digital tools and methods have on the architectural creation process and the built work?
The fact that the computer is no longer just a drawing tool is something that many students and architects have already been confronted with in the recent past. Parameter-controlled design, algorithmically described forms and computer-aided manufacturing processes are increasingly being discussed, and the number of research institutions dealing with these topics is constantly increasing.

But what added value does this bring? And how can the digital information resulting from the new processes be integrated into real spaces and constructions?
The central challenge for digital design and construction in the field of teaching and research will be to increasingly integrate the enormous creative potential offered by new digital technologies into the range of complex architectural requirements, which also means seeing and using digital processes in architecture as a coherent design process.

As part of the "Digital Methods in Architecture" professorship at Fachhochschule Dortmund, these current questions and challenges for architecture are discussed and examined in an application-oriented manner.
