Like hardly any other profession, the architect combines classical craftsmanship and innovative technologies with an understanding of the social world. Therefore, the essential content of the practice- and future-oriented study of architecture is to convey a holistic understanding of building culture.
In addition to imparting specialist knowledge and understanding, the promotion of individual personalities - who find their place as future architects - is the focus of teaching. Therefore, communication, mutual discussion and independent action, i.e. "research-based learning" are important aspects of the education at the university.
The aim of the course is to equip you with the special ability to help shape the ever changing built space with responsibly and with a high quality level. The study program therefore offers a broad subject-related foundation as a basis, which later enables many different development possibilities in an increasingly diversified professional field.
In order to be able to guarantee a well-founded and comprehensive education, we offer an 8-semester Bachelor's degree program, which already entitles students to join the Chamber of Architects after 2 years of practice.
A mobility window in the fifth semester allows you to study abroad or offers you the opportunity to complete a semester-long practical phase. Being able to gain this external experience during your studies, as well as making practice-oriented contacts with offices and the business world, is a special feature of the program.
Close communication between lecturers, staff and students
The open atmosphere of the faculty is characterized by personal dialogues with committed lecturers, staff and students. Numerous workshops, laboratories and workrooms are at your disposal. The IT lab, which is open around the clock and has a wide range of equipment, enables students to work together in groups as well as to receive personal expert advice. The image lab is the place, where students gain concrete practical experience in drawing, painting and sculptural experiments, in addition to explicit and implicit knowledge. The media laboratory offers space for digital image processing and photography, and in the well-equipped model-making workshops, students can create their own models to a high standard. In the civil engineering laboratories, in addition to the laboratory exercises that take place, students also work together on interesting development and research tasks with the help of lecturers, staff and student assistants.
Well-founded - generalist training as an architect with further education opportunities
Our department offers the 8-semester Bachelor's degree program supported by the Chamber of Architects and thus fulfills one of the obligatory requirements for obtaining the authorization to submit plans and for membership in the Chamber of Architects. Thus, a sound and comprehensive education is guaranteed, which can be deepened with the three master's degree programs "Metal Building Envelopes", "Urban Planning NRW" and "Resource Architecture".
A well-coordinated timetable and intensive teaching make it possible to study within the standard period of study. A wide range of varied design and construction projects as well as numerous scientific-technical modules complement each other in the teaching.
The challenging topics are practice-oriented and provide vivid insights into the various fields of activity in construction. Workshops, summer academies, lecture series and excursions to current and historical buildings and exhibitions complement lectures and seminars.
Integrated projects and a diverse range of elective modules allow for a broad-based in-depth study or a targeted specialization as preparation for the master's degree programs. Ecological, economic and social aspects form the basis of our sustainable architectural education.
After successful completion of the 8-semester Bachelor's program, the university degree "Bachelor of Sciences" is awarded. After 2 years of professional practice, membership in the Chamber of Architects is possible, with the option of further training in the Academy of the Chamber of Architects. Thus, the title of architect is acquired at the same time.
