It is possible to apply without proof of a language test. However, the German language certificate must be presented for enrollment in the degree program.
Recognized examinations as proof of language proficiency are
- German language examination for university entrance (DSH) with an overall result of DSH 2 or DSH 3.
- Test of German as a Foreign Language (TestDaF) with a total of at least "16" in the four parts of the examination (it is irrelevant whether level 3 was also achieved as a partial result; the important thing is that the total is 16).
- "German" section of the assessment test successfully passed at a German state preparatory college or a German private preparatory college that is recognized by the state or externally at a competent district government.
- German Language Diploma of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs - Level II (DSD II).

- Goethe Certificate C 2
The following language examination is also recognized exclusively for the Bachelor's and Master's degree courses in the Faculty of Design:
- Goethe-Zertifikat C1 (as well as the language examinations listed above)
Exemption from a German language exam for all Bachelor's and Master's degree programs:
- on successful completion of a German-language grammar school abroad (language of instruction German),
- successful completion of at least 2 years of vocational training in Germany
An application for exemption from the language test can be submitted if proof of a completed degree in German studies can be provided.

Documents are regularly checked for authenticity by the Fachhochschule Dortmund. Applications will be rejected if a forgery is discovered. In case of knowledge after enrollment, students will be exmatriculated according to § 51 Hochschulgesetz NRW. Forging and/or submitting false documents is a criminal offense and can be punished with a prison sentence of up to 5 years or a fine as forgery of documents in accordance with § 267 of the German Criminal Code.
