DISCOFIEBER
A film by Oliver Schwabe
D 2022 | 45 min
Dancing under the glittering disco ball to the music of Boney M, the Bee Gees or later Depeche Mode in the 80s. Out of the dreary everyday life - into the disco and being a star for a night - that suited the lifestyle of many young people. The Ruhr region was particularly receptive to the new trend, as the electrifying sound stood in stark contrast to the hard working reality of the miners. The coal dust could be shaken off on the dance floor - every night. In a sea of colorful lights, wafts of fog and dancing bodies. The "Flash Light" in Gelsenkirchen was one of the best-known discos in NRW. Back then, boss Reinhard Schwalm brought "Silver Convention" to his disco before they landed a mega hit with "Fly Robin Fly" and Rüdiger Müller from Bochum was inspired by New York's "Studio 54" for his disco "Theatre de Tao" and later became the world market leader for disco lasers!
DISCOFIEBER is based on the stories of the former operators, waiters and DJs of two Ruhr area discos and uses a wealth of archive material to tell the story of a time when John Travolta became the icon of an entire generation and shows with a wink how NRW also succumbed to disco fever.
With Rüdiger Müller, Heike and Reinhard Schwalm, Karin Skomroch, DJ Arwed Freihof, DJ Ralf Jannusch and Thomas Nikutta.
