In this article, I contribute my socio-political expertise as a basic income researcher by discussing the idea of an unconditional basic income (UBI) and the alternative social infrastructure (SI) in terms of how it could change the current situation of local authorities.
Specifically, the following questions will be addressed: How can municipal sustainability be understood from a social services perspective? To what extent do UBI and SI strengthen or weaken the autonomy and self-empowerment of client groups and relevant actors? What consequences can be expected for social cohesion and civil society? And finally: how could such a transformation process be initiated and implemented?
