Because every person, by virtue of being born, is an *initium*—a beginning and a newcomer to the world—people can take the initiative and set new things in motion.
[Hannah Arendt]
Engaging with art helps us respond to the (perceived) threat with “tolerance for ambivalence”—with the resilient ability to seismographically perceive the diffuse uncertainties and threats of our time, to analytically process them, and to creatively transform them—not least so that we may ultimately remain emotionally capable of action and productive.
The growing awareness of the destructive forces of the alliance between major tech corporations and authoritarian politicians presents us, as a democratic society, with new challenges. To act responsibly, we need strategies to engage in the development process without allowing ourselves to be influenced by the instinct toward negativity, which is amplified by media coverage and (conspiracy) theories on social media.
Media art projects encourage us to engage with new technologies in a critical and reflective manner, as well as to continually broaden our viewpoints and perspectives in order to devise guidelines for fair and ethically responsible use. They invite us to become creative co-creators, to question our role within this complex network, and to continually redefine it.
