About the project

In order to achieve the goals of the energy transition within the intended timeframe, energy-efficient solutions must be developed both for new buildings and, increasingly, for the energy-efficient refurbishment of existing buildings. VG_WALL is a research project that aims to design and develop a multifunctional building module for the building envelope, consisting primarily of vacuum glass (thermal insulation, sound insulation) that can be modeled with selected translucent and transparent building materials depending on requirements. The vacuum glass is to be considered as functional, transparent insulation and soundproofing. As part of the research project, translucent and transparent glass elements are being developed as hybrid structures for façades. The adaptation of conceived hybrid structures to conventional façade systems such as: Mullion-transom constructions, direct bonding of point-fixed façade constructions in new and existing buildings (retrofit) are objectives of this research project. Innovative façade concepts for unitized and all-glass façades are also being investigated. The VG_WALL research project is funded by the Zukunft Bau research initiative, Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) and supported by cooperation partners DOW Deutschland GmbH, Fuchs Design GmbH, LUCEM GmbH, MAGNA Glaskeramik GmbH, RAICO GmbH.
