Environmental and climate protection in integration and language courses

Fast facts

About the project

The project, which is funded as part of the BMUB's climate protection initiative, focuses more strongly on migrants who are learning German for the first time or are completing a vocational qualification.

This is primarily achieved through the development of teaching materials that are used by specially trained lecturers in integration and language courses in three major cities in the Rhineland/Westphalia region. After testing and optimizing the materials, they will be used in courses in three other major cities. The training material can then be used nationwide in integration and job-related language courses.

The accompanying evaluation cycles are used to record the changes in behavior achieved by course participants and teachers and to ensure the targeted design and applicability of the training material.

In addition, campaigns and activities on environmental and climate protection will be carried out in cooperation with the migrant self-organizations Yeşil Çember and Migrants for Agenda 21.

Project objective

The overarching aim of Integra_et_Klima is to teach environmental and climate protection skills to migrants taking part in integration and job-related language courses. To this end, the participants are informed about climate and environmental protection and are taught strategies for climate protection in everyday life so that they can reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition, sustainability communication is to be introduced and established in migrant organizations.

"Climate Day at the German-Turkish European School in Berlin" campaign successfully completed!
As part of the Integra_et_Klima project, the Turkish-speaking environmental organization "Yeşil Çember" (German: Grüner Kreis) carried out a climate protection campaign at the German-Turkish Aziz-Nesin Europaschule in Berlin.

A climate day was held at the school on May 10, 2017. Pupils in grades 3-6 had prepared nine stations in advance with five teachers, at which various environmental topics were to be presented interactively. These included tables on paper recycling, raised beds, microplastics, FairTrade and the greenhouse effect. In the morning, the pupils were able to take part at each station in turn and collect stickers. The slip of paper with all the stickers could be handed in at the end for a prize draw. In the afternoon, parents and other guests also joined in.

During the preparation and follow-up of the event, the children dealt intensively with the topic. They expanded both their German and Turkish vocabulary in order to be able to discuss the topics. They compiled the new terms and words in a Turkish-German environmental dictionary, which was presented at the school on July 17, 2017. The book comprises 72 pages with over 500 words from eight categories as well as everyday tips on environmental protection. The aim of the dictionary is to support children's language development and at the same time raise awareness of sustainability. You can download the dictionary here. As part of Integra_et_Klima, a total of three campaigns will take place in 2017, in which climate protection will be linked to the acquisition of the German language. This campaign was initiated and implemented by Ms. Gülcan Nitsch, graduate biologist and managing partner at Yeşil Çember. The campaign was funded by the BMUB as part of the National Climate Protection Initiative.
