New dual leadership on the Executive Board

Published

This year, Studierendenwerk Dortmund will be led by a dual management team for the first time. Burkhard Schwemin has been the new Commercial Director of the Studierendenwerk since January 1, 2024. The 57-year-old was previously an authorized signatory of HAGEN.WIRTSCHAFTS-ENTWICKLUNGS GmbH and Managing Director of HAGEN.AREAL, a unit of Hagen Economic Development. Johannes Zedel, who previously served as acting Managing Director, will take over as Managing Director of Social Affairs.

After studying technical business administration at the Märkische Fachhochschule, Burkhard Schwemin was an employee of the city of Hagen for around 30 years, including 10 years as head of the real estate, construction management and housing department. Born in Hagen, he is married and has three daughters.

He knows the Studierendenwerk not only from his visits to the canteen in Hagen during his student days. He was also involved in the construction of the "Im Alten Holz" residential complex on behalf of the city of Hagen. Burkhard Schwemin: "The Studierendenwerk plays an important role in the housing market. When we talk about educational equality, this is the key. We must continue to work on this, as well as on many other issues that are important for students in their everyday lives. I'm excited about my new role, I'm going to take a look at all the departments and locations and I'm looking forward to working with my colleagues. I also want to say: my door is always open!"

Expansion of the advisory services

Johannes Zedel will also continue his work at the Studierendenwerk from January 1, 2024 in his new role as Managing Director for Social Affairs. Zedel previously worked at the Studierendenwerk as Head of Communication, Social Affairs, Culture and Deputy Managing Director. "Following the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, we have noticed that there is an increasing demand for advice. Expanding our range of advisory services will therefore remain a key focus of our social mission in the future," says Zedel.

The new management has the backing of the Studierendenwerk's Administrative Board (VR). Simon Waimann, Chairman of the VR: "With Mr. Schwemin, we have been able to gain a managing director who has many years of experience in the public sector and, as a child of the Ruhr region, is open and approachable to people. These are the best prerequisites for successfully leading the Studierendenwerk into the future. Through his work, Mr. Zedel is already very familiar with the structures of the Studierendenwerk and the current social challenges that come with studying. I wish Mr. Schwemin and Mr. Zedel all the best for their start and look forward to working with them!"
