How to make eels blink

Soldering on the miniature eel: Prof. Dr. Simone Arnold (right) supported the children.

A new round for the children's FH: this time, ten to twelve-year-olds at the Sonnenstraße location learned how the electric eel generates electricity - and how they can use their technical know-how to make handmade specimens light up and flash.

Souvenir with LEDs: FH model "Aali

The electric eel is an exciting example of electrical engineering in the animal world. This is because the body of this fish contains many tiny "power cells" that work together like batteries in a circuit. "When they work simultaneously, a powerful surge of electricity is created," explained Prof. Dr. Simone Arnold in a short lecture on April 17, 2026. "Technology and nature have more in common than you might think," said the researcher.

Afterwards, the children, some accompanied by their parents, got active themselves: under supervision, they soldered various resistors and colored LEDs onto small circuit boards - in the shape of the UAS fish "Aali" from the 3D printer - which provide an effective souvenir of the children's UAS using a battery.
