Successful Kickoff for “Science Meets Fiction – Film & Reflection”
On June 17, 2026, the first event in the “Science Meets Fiction – Film & Reflection”(Opens in a new tab) series took place at the Faculty of Applied Social Studies in the Schauburg Dortmund. The event kicked off with a screening of the film “Extrawurst,” which was then discussed as a social science case study. The discussion focused on questions of power relations, belonging, norms of normality, and exclusion.
Vivid Reflection
Following the film screening and a short break, a moderated discussion took place with Prof. Dr. Nicolle Pfaff(Opens in a new tab) from the University of Duisburg-Essen. About 50 participants took part in a lively exchange and reflected together on key scenes and conflicts in the film.
The event was organized by Prof. Dr. Emra Ilgün-Birhimeoğlu(Opens in a new tab) and Prof. Dr. Dierk Borstel(Opens in a new tab) with support from Rebecca Ehlen and Loris Wissel of Sunrise(Opens in a new tab) as a collaborating partner. The successful kickoff event demonstrated just how productive the combination of film, social science analysis, and collective reflection can be.
