Profile

The chemistry and metallography laboratory offers workstations and equipment for handling chemicals and preparing metallographic samples. This includes, for example, standard laboratory glassware for various applications, an analytical balance for weighing small quantities and a drying cabinet. Mobile extraction equipment and fume cupboards ("digestors") are available for handling hazardous substances.

The metallographic equipment includes a separating machine for crushing samples, equipment for embedding as well as grinding and polishing devices. An optical microscope is also available to monitor the grinding and polishing progress. A fume cupboard can be used to prepare etching solutions and etch the samples themselves.

The laboratory for chemistry and metallography is used in the practical courses of the elective subjects surface technology and environmental technology (both Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering) as well as in the basic practical course (Bachelor of Vehicle Development).

Metallography is the method for analyzing the structure of materials and is therefore regularly used in damage analysis. Metallography is also widely used in material and process development, e.g. in the field of additive manufacturing of metal components.
