Cooling team

Team description

The team's task is to ensure the cooling of the various components of the Nuevo35. In addition to cooling the drive units, the focus is on the temperature management of the battery.

Work packages

Various concepts are developed for cooling the battery. Furthermore, the additional components required for cooling the batteries are designed and determined. These include the radiator, fan, pump, expansion tank and the rest of the pipe system.
Work is also being carried out on cooling the electric motors. A radiator that can cool the two electric motors must be designed and integrated into the overall vehicle together with the necessary components such as the fan, pump and expansion tank.

A cooling concept for the combustion engine will be developed for this purpose, and the radiator, fan and expansion tank must be determined.

What has been achieved so far?

A new concept for the cooling plate was developed for battery cooling. Concepts for the cooling plate were optimized on the basis of analytical calculations using a Matlab script and flow simulation in ANSYS. It is also possible to further refine these concepts and carry out further calculations in the future. In addition, the concept for the position of the cooler behind the vehicle was defined and the necessary cooler for the system was calculated and selected using a Matlab script.

Based on a self-written Matlab script, a fan was selected in the electric motor cooling work package, which currently fits perfectly into the planned interfering edge model. In addition, other components such as the cooler, hoses and pump have already been ordered by the laboratory. The overall system has already been added to the overall CAD model with the overall integration team.

For the combustion engine cooling system, the concept for the position of the radiator behind the vehicle was defined and the necessary radiator was calculated and selected using a Matlab script. The necessary piping was also determined.

Goals for the coming semesters

The objectives for the next semester are sorted according to the respective work packages.

In the battery cooling work package, the objectives are as follows:

  • Develop a concept for a cooling plate that can be removed from the underside to keep the batteries safe in any driving situation.
  • More precise calculations are to be realized with the help of measurement data collected on site. For example, the operating temperature of the battery and other boundary conditions that are advantageous for the analytical and simulative calculations will be used as measurement data.
  • In addition, the system responsible for heat dissipation from the cooling plate is to be calculated and then designed.
  • An FMEA is to be carried out to accompany the project

The objectives of the electric motor cooling work package are as follows:

  • Connection of cooler and fan
  • Design of the overall system and subsequent installation in the overall vehicle
  • Ordering the selected components
  • Accompany laboratory tests that aim to cool the electric motor and collect measured values for the optimization of electric motor cooling

The objectives in the combustion engine cooling work package are as follows

  • Adaptation of the hoses from the radiator to the engine
  • Simulation of the radiator flow to optimize the efficiency of the radiator
  • Ordering the selected components
