Insights into the Faculty of Applied Social Studies at Fachhochschule Dortmund

With its long tradition in Dortmund, the Faculty of Applied Social Studies stands for a sound scientific and practice-oriented education that deals with social and socio-political issues and also aims to take an international view of the challenges of social change and the associated transformations.

Studying one of the study programs in the Faculty of Applied Social Studies opens up a broad spectrum of future fields of work for graduates, from the "classic" fields of social work to employment in national and international institutions at the interfaces between science and practice, such as specialist departments and associations or non-governmental organizations. Our two Bachelor's degree courses offer a wide range of learning and teaching opportunities with distinct practical and project phases as well as the opportunity to deepen your own areas of interest. Our faculty also has a compact network of international cooperation partners for international activities such as a semester or internship abroad.

In addition to acquiring specialist knowledge and the necessary (methodological) skills, critical reflection on one's own actions (in the practical semester or dual practice) is an important building block for one's own professionalization.

Our faculty is committed to the sustainable development of society and aims to fulfill its social responsibility in research and teaching, particularly in the following fields of research:

  • Youth, Migration. Diversity
  • (Urban) societies in transition
  • Psychosocial dimensions in transdisciplinary sustainability research

In addition, our faculty's Master's degree programs, with their strong research orientation, offer students the opportunity to develop their own research perspectives and to critically examine current topics and challenges of social change.
