"Architecture in Namibia: confronting the past / addressing the future"

This lecture provides a succinct overview of Namibia's architectural history, through which the key features of a regionally appropriate architecture are outlined. The mayor unresolved challenges to building in the arid country are discussed, and some mayor tasks for future architectural practise are posed.

Jens Wiedow is a lecturer at the Namibia University of Science and Technology and a doctoral candidate at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg on the topic: "Housing the Administration: Architecture of the Public Works Department in South-West Africa/Namibia 1945-1955". He is a descendant of the fourth generation of German emigrants in Namibia, completed his Bachelor's and Master's degree at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in South Africa and has several years of practical experience in planning offices in Berlin, Cape Town and Windhoek. His research interest lies in colonial-modern building culture.
