Lecture with Mechtild Nagel

Mechthild Nagel, Professor of Philosophy and Africana Studies, is Director of the Center for Ethics, Peace, and Social Justice at SUNY Cortland and Founding Editor of Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's and Gender Studies. Author of Masking the Abject: A Genealogy of Play (Lexington, 2002) and Ludic Ubuntu Ethics: Decolonizing Justice (Routledge, 2023), she co-edited 7 anthologies.

She is interested in critical justice studies, global feminisms, critical race theory, diversity studies, Indigenous justice studies. She is founder of Sophia's Garden, a partnership with area Cortland schools, where college students explore philosophy with children, from toddlers to teens.

Mechthild Nagel is Professor of Philosophy and Africana Studies and Director of the Center for Ethics, Peace and Social Justice at SUNY Cortland. She is also the founder of the journal "Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's and Gender Studies". Her research interests span several areas, including critical justice studies, global feminisms, critical race theory, diversity studies, and indigenous justice studies.

The lecture will focus on transnational and decolonial reflections on prison abolition and punishment. Core theses from Mechthild Nagel's works "Ludic Ubuntu Ethics" and "Carceral Logic" will be presented. The lecture will be an opportunity to question the paradigm of agonistic justice and to develop the possibility of cooperative coexistence.

The lecture will be held in English and summarized in sections in German to give all participants a comprehensive insight into the topic. The subsequent discussion will be held bilingually to encourage a lively exchange of different perspectives.
