Staging real and virtual spaces and environments is just as much a part of the Scenography and Communication / Scenographic Design and Communication Master's study program as designing communicative processes. Scenography means presentation and exhibition. By designing stages and spaces, you tell your own stories and convey messages.
Profile of the study program
Scenography and communication deals with questions such as
- How can I design museum and exhibition spaces across different media?
- How can I create narrative qualities in film, theater and stage spaces?
- What potential does the scenography of public spaces offer in terms of shaping social developments?
- Which scenographic communication strategies are relevant for the future?
Presentation and exhibition
The project studies focus on theater and stage spaces, museum and exhibition spaces, media and hyper-media spaces, public spaces and temporary spaces for brand staging and corporate communication. You can experiment with individual projects and work in interdisciplinary teams on third-party funded projects.
Bilingual, international and project-oriented
The three-semester Master's degree program is offered as a bilingual study program with a predominantly German-language focus or with a predominantly English-language focus. The project-oriented course allows you to specialize in the areas of exhibitions, museums, art in public spaces and the stage.
At the same time, you can deepen your knowledge creatively, technically and scientifically at the faculty and in cooperations outside the university. The course offers you the greatest possible freedom. You can implement scenographic projects
of your choice in all conceivable fields of creative and artistic spatial and event design.
In the first year of study, you will acquire the necessary knowledge through the modules Experimental Exploration & Design of Scenographic Fields of Work and Scenographic Conceptualization of Spatial Design and Staging, among others. The second year of study includes the module Project Realization of a Scenographic Design Project. Learning management skills is also part of the course.
The study program is internationally oriented. Project practice during the course promotes international exchange and contributes to the formation of a worldwide scenographic network.

What do I need?
1. required degree
Prerequisite for admission to the program is proof of
- a Diplom or Bachelor's degree in the fields of design/design, architecture/interior architecture, urban planning/urban planning/spatial planning or a comparable course of study at a university with curricular components of a space-oriented design course of study
or - a diploma or Bachelor's degree in art, media, cultural studies or humanities at a higher education institution with curricular components relating to a particular field of scenographic or spatial and/or communication design practice.
The study programs must contain 210 credit points according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). Degrees that do not have an ECTS system must be converted accordingly. If a study program only comprises 180 ECTS credit points, it is possible to complete the missing 30 credit points
- by successfully completing an internship or several internships with a total duration of 20 weeks. Evidence of a corresponding internship can be provided before, during or when applying for admission to the degree program or
- by completing the bridging and alignment modules as a practical project for the Master's degree program.
Proof of the 30 ECTS credit points is a prerequisite for the module examinations.
Study programs at foreign universities must also provide for a final thesis (diploma or Bachelor's thesis) comparable to the study programs at German universities in terms of minimum quality requirements.

Applicants must decide on a language focus at the time of application and provide evidence of the following language levels in accordance with the desired language focus of the study program:
a) predominantly German-language focus:
For the study program with the language focus "predominantly German-language focus", proof of sufficient command of the German language must be provided. Proof for applicants who have not obtained their university entrance qualification or their university degree at a German-speaking institution is provided, for example, by the "DSH-2" language examination (taken at a university, not at a private language institute), the Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (TestDaF) with at least 16 points in all four parts of the examination (even if level 3 is included as an individual result) or the "telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule" examination.
b) Predominantly English-language focus:
For the study program with the language focus "predominantly English-language focus", applicants* must provide proof of sufficient command of English. In exceptional cases, proof can be provided by means of an equivalent certificate or as proof with the corresponding minimum requirements (corresponding to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - CEFR). The subject committee decides whether equivalence exists.
3. suitability assessment
An additional prerequisite for admission to the course is proof of artistic and creative aptitude for the course. The procedure for determining course-related aptitude is carried out at least once a year in a two-stage procedure for applicants who wish to take up a Master's degree program in Scenography and Communication/Scenographic Design and Communication in the Faculty of Design. Admission to the procedure requires an application, which must be submitted to the Dean of the Faculty of Design at Fachhochschule Dortmund by December 15 of each year for the start of studies in the summer semester and by May 15 of each year for the start of studies in the winter semester, together with the required documents.
The Faculty of Design will inform applicants in writing of the committee's decision on the results of the procedure. The results are communicated as passed or failed. They must be accompanied by information on legal remedies.
With a pass result, applicants are awarded the course-related artistic and creative aptitude.
The submissions are available for collection at the Faculty of Design within one month of completion of the aptitude procedure. After the deadline, they will be destroyed in compliance with data protection regulations.

The study program starts annually in the summer and winter semesters and is admission-free. However, enrolment for the study program is only possible after recognition of aptitude and fulfilment of the other admission requirements.
