In the context of the exhibition "Dagmar Buhr: Lui" at the Neues Museum Nürnberg, we present a Typotalk with Lars Harmsen, Creative Director at Melville Brand Design and publisher of the magazine SLANTED.

More than almost any other design element, typography reflects the diversity and heterogeneity of a city. Typography produces new urban spaces and interacts with the places and people of a city. Typography can represent the identities of cities, people, companies, brands and organizations and thus create social and commercial places. Typography can make cultural patterns of action visible, reinterpret and question them. Typography can convey information and guide people through the city. Typography in urban space is the work of designers, engineers, amateurs and children.

Over the past 20 years, Harmsen's focus has been on typography, corporate and editorial design. Formerly Creative Director at MAGMA Brand Design, he moved to Munich and is currently Creative Director at Melville Brand Design. Six years ago, he founded the font label Volcano-Type, which developed into the influential SLANTED blog and magazine. In addition to his professorship at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund, Harmsen now runs SLANTED PUBLISHERS with Julia Kahl and remains a passionate graphic designer with numerous national and international awards to his name.
