Research workshop: Think like a journalist - Whether documentary or fictional, good films are characterized by in-depth and thorough research. It is not only factual accuracy that counts, but also the competent handling of different sources and a suitable narrative. - In our workshop on January 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., we will deal with information gathering, fact-checking and opinion-forming, with types of sources and research methods, but also with current socio-political issues and their impact on our use of language, the selection of our protagonists and decisions in storytelling. We will be guided by five key questions: Where do I start with in-depth research? Why do I see what I see? What are reliable sources? How do I check information? What are the right questions to ask? - - SPEAKER: Dr. Tong-Jin Smith - university lecturer and freelance journalist - Tong-Jin Smith has been working as a journalist since 1992, including for Welt am Sonntag, Tagesspiegel, ZDF and CSR Magazin. She completed her doctorate in political science at the University of Heidelberg in 2002 on "Democracy and Democratization in East Asia". In 2014 she became a lecturer at the Dekra Hochschule Medien, in 2016 a lecturer at the Institute for Journalism and Communication Studies at the FU Berlin, where she founded the Center for Media and Information Literacy (CeMIL) together with Carola Richter in 2019. In the same year, she was appointed Professor of Journalism at HMKW Berlin. Her main interests in teaching and research are news and information literacy (education) and the transformation processes of journalism in the network society and attention economy. Her journalistic focus is on sustainability, urban development and education. - https://www.polsoz.fu-berlin.de/kommwiss/institut/cemil/index.html - https://www.hmkw.de/hochschule/lehrende/fachbereich-journalismus-und-kommunikation/tong-jin-smith/ - https://www.linkedin.com/in/tongjinsmith/
