Content

The phenomenon of historical post-mortem or death photography peaked in the second half of the 19th century and is therefore directly linked to the invention of photography in 1839 and the possibilities of this new medium. This article examines the question of how the portrait of the dead was preserved and viewed and which social uses can be deduced from this.
