About the project

The subject of the research project was the optimization of the window system developed in the ULTRASLIM project with profiles made of glass fibre reinforced plastic. To this end, further investigations were carried out into heat transfer and wind load behaviour as well as other types of opening and optimization of thermal insulation. The energy-efficient refurbishment of existing windows with vacuum glass was also investigated.

After the properties and limitations of the ULTRALIGHT initial geometry were demonstrated both mathematically and experimentally, the profile geometry was significantly optimized and now exhibits significantly improved thermal component behaviour and wind load behaviour. The newly developed window system also allows the implementation of alternative opening types.

It has also been shown that vacuum glass can be used for the energy-efficient refurbishment of old windows while retaining their visual appearance. The effectiveness of the measure must be examined on a case-by-case basis and coordinated with other renovation measures.
