About the project

Semester-accompanying practical exercise on the topic of "Architectural materials"

Building materials play an important role in today's architecture and are subject to increasing demands. In addition, climate change and the scarcity of raw materials are increasingly influencing the construction sector. The responsibility of future architects in the use of building materials with regard to materiality, form, function and aesthetics is therefore an elementary part of their work.

The task of the semester-accompanying exercise of the course Building Material Technology 1 is to deal with material both as a construction material and as a design material. The students analyze a material of their choice and create a material sample in the specified dimensions and according to the design specifications. Subsequently, under the guidance of Daniel Horn and Paul-Andreas Maurer, the technical data, in particular from the point of view of sustainability, are worked out for each specific building material/product.

The aim of these practical exercises is to train perception for a better understanding in later practical working life and to raise awareness of the versatility of materials and the different application possibilities of building materials with regard to resource conservation and energy efficiency. The acquisition of skills for analyzing and evaluating building products in combination with the reliable procurement of information and materials is another important component.
