About the project

Prototype of a metal stair railing

The task of the students of the elective module Building Materials Technology - Specialization of the summer semester 2019 was the design, construction and construction of a metal stair railing. Four prototype railing constructions were implemented from the design results.

The seminar was divided into three parts and was worked on in teams of two. In the first theoretical part, the task was examined by means of short presentations by the teams and a workshop course was completed in the metal laboratory. In addition to the basic properties of the various metals, processing options and examples were also discussed. In the second, conceptual part, a design was developed and finally presented using a model and poster. The final, third part was characterized by joint practical work in the metal construction workshop in which a selection of designs was produced as a 60 cm wide metal demonstrator. The stair railing was to make use of the typical properties of metal in its design. Metal could be used in any form. Depending on the concept, the railing could have a solid or filigree character. Structure, statics and appearance were consciously developed.

The aim of this practical course was to raise awareness of metal as a material, to acquire design and metal construction skills and to implement them in the metal laboratory.
