About the project

The task of the "Building in Existing Contexts" seminar was to find "deficient" urban situations within the city of Dortmund, carefully analyze them and propose them for replanning by means of an outline. In doing so, the historical urban development - in comparison to TODAY, with a vision for TOMORROW - was to be brought into focus. "Bad architecture" is to "our own" detriment and also has a negative impact on the city economy.

Therefore, fictitious architectural concepts were to be developed that appropriately emphasize a visionary idea in urban planning within the city of Dortmund and sustainably enhance the location found in each case; in social, design and, above all, architectural culture form. A corresponding new use was to be considered according to the local situation and entered into the levels in abstract form as a flexible floor plan typology. Urban space and urban design and a holistic architectural approach - in the sense of a future sustainable urban building culture - became the central design theme within the seminar. In the following brochure, you will find nine selected (UN)PLACES and associated visionary designs by students at Fachhochschule Dortmund, which are intended in particular to stimulate reflection.
