CERN calls on young scientists

Published

Sabrina Holthausen provided information about the wide range of training and entry opportunities at CERN.

The nuclear research center CERN calls its tour through several universities a "roadshow". At Fachhochschule Dortmund, it became clear that for some students it could be the road that leads to their professional future.

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in the canton of Geneva in Switzerland, is best known for the Large Hadron Collider, the particle accelerator with the 26.7-kilometre-long underground ring tunnel in which elementary particles and energy states are researched.

Less well known are the many other fields of research, which include robotics, computer science, electronics, vacuum and cryogenics technology and materials science. The areas of work and job entry opportunities are correspondingly diverse.

Students are also addressed

CERN employees Sabrina Holthausen and Tim Brücklmayer explained that they are not only looking for experienced professionals, but also for students and graduates at their roadshow at Fachhochschule Dortmund on Wednesday, May 6.

With an information stand and presentations, they provided information about the opportunities: These range from initial practical experience in the form of internships or summer programs to final theses and doctoral dissertations to long-term employment in an international and interdisciplinary research environment.

Many study programs are welcome

Skills in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, physics and mathematics are particularly in demand, but administrative specialists also play an important role in the organization's operations and are welcome as applicants.

The visit to CERN was organized and supervised on site by staff from the Student and International Affairs and University Communication departments.
