Bernhard Breil completed his studies in Medical Informatics at the Fachhochschule Dortmund in 2008. Today, he holds a professorship at the Faculty of Healthcare at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences.

I work at the Faculty of Healthcare at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences.
What is your role?
I am a Professor of Health Informatics and, as Dean of the Faculty of Healthcare, I am also responsible for all teaching in the faculty.
What does your typical working day look like?
During the semester, I am active in teaching myself and give lectures and tutorials - especially in the Medical Informatics study program. I also coordinate activities at the faculty and the university. This means lots of emails and meetings in various constellations, e.g. staff meetings, service meetings, departmental conferences, etc.. If there is still time, I try to push ahead with my research topics, "Acceptance of eHealth solutions".
What moments do you particularly appreciate in your job?
These are moments when you prepare and finally make strategic decisions such as the introduction of new study programs or establish and expand new collaborations with external partners from the healthcare sector. And, after many years, the acceptance of scientific articles. I also appreciate the variety: teaching, research, strategic departmental development and personnel decisions.

What is your superpower?
I like to be inspired (far too often) by new topics and ideas and can pass on this enthusiasm. This enables me to motivate other people to work with me on the many challenges currently facing the healthcare sector.
How did your career start go and what is your tip for our students?
Starting my career went very well because I learned a lot during my studies, especially the ability to familiarize myself with new topics. My tip for students is to develop and maintain this ability in particular. During your studies, there are various subjects that you need to be fit for the exam. At work, these are ideas and topics that are brought to you by superiors or external people.
What is your best memory from your time studying at Fachhochschule Dortmund?
Finalizing joint programming projects both in the morning during the presentation at the university and in the evening in the Figge-Stube with my fellow students, with whom I am still in good contact today.
