Building physics

Fast facts

About the teachingarea

Building physics deals with the interaction between buildings and the physical phenomena of heat, moisture, sound, daylight and fire. Energy savings, comfortable and hygienic living conditions in rooms and the prevention of moisture damage are some of the aims of building physics. It is also important to protect residents from disturbing noise and to protect people and property from the effects of fire. Building physics is a multifaceted discipline. It is worth taking a closer look at the sub-areas of building physics. Knowledge of building physics is essential for architects when designing, planning and constructing buildings. Structural damage, both in new buildings and in the renovation and modernization of existing buildings, as well as errors in the context of monument preservation, are often caused by ignorance of elementary building physics laws and interrelationships. Building physics must be seen in close connection with design, building construction, building services and building material technology. Damage-free building construction, the renovation of old buildings and the preservation of historical monuments require a high level of knowledge of building physics.
