Optical microscopes, a scanning electron microscope with EDX unit and a spark emission spectrometer are available in the measuring laboratory.
The VHX 2000 digital microscope from Keyence can magnify a sample up to 1000 times. A particular strength of the system is its ability to capture images with very high depth of field. The software also has a wide range of options for measuring samples (length, area, angle, etc.).
With the help of the scanning electron microscope, images of suitable samples can be taken with a magnification of up to 50,000 times.
In addition to high-resolution imaging, elemental analysis can be performed with the integrated EDX unit. This allows the chemical composition of appropriately prepared samples to be determined in very small areas.
Non-conductive samples can be coated with a thin layer of gold or carbon using a sputtering system.
The spark emission spectrometer is used to precisely determine the chemical composition of metallic samples, especially steels. The advantage of this method over EDX lies in the significantly more reliable analysis of elements that are only present in very small quantities.
The measuring laboratory is used both in normal teaching (e.g. compulsory elective subject surface technology, student work) and for projects with external partners.
Of course, the equipment in the measuring laboratory is also available to colleagues from other departments at any time.
