The film workshop includes the equipment rental and the facilities for recording, post-production and screening of films. All film, video, audio, stage, lighting and electricity equipment used there is maintained here.

Equipment

Equipment loan

The following equipment is available to users in the lending area:
35mm and 16mm film cameras (Arri 35III, SR3, Bolex), video camcorders up to full format and 4K (e.g. Sony FX9, F55, FS7, FS5; Panasonic AC160), lens sets and zooms (Sigma, Xeen CF, Zeiss, Sony, Angénieux), camera filters (e.g. Tiffen, Schneider, Nisi), radio sharpeners (Tilta), viewfinders and monitors up to 24" (e.g. TV-Logic, Sony).(e.g. TV-Logic, Sony), memory card (RAW) recorders (Atomos, BMD), image radio links (Teradek), tripod heads (Sachtler, Vinten), dollies (Movie Tech Magnum with mini jib arm and rails), microphones for ambisonics, surround, stereo, mono (e.g. Schoeps, Sisi, Tilta).(e.g. Schoeps, Sennheiser, Røde, DPA, VT), radio links (Lectrosonics, Sennheiser), mixers and audio recorders (e.g. Sound Devices, Zoom, Nagra), timecode sets (Tentacle Sync), incandescent lighting up to 10kW (Dedolight, Arri, LTM, Strand), HMI lighting up to 4kW (Arri, LTM, Strand), LED lighting (e.g. Astera, Aput, Astera, Aput, Strand).Astera, Aputure, Velvet, BB&S, Lupo), Butterflies 12x12', stationary and mobile power supplies (distributors up to 3x63A, 14 cases with V-mount batteries).

Lending is barcode-supported. There is also equipment insurance from the faculty.

Film studio

An air-conditioned film studio with a floor area of 13x17.5m and a ceiling height of over 6m is available for the recordings. It is equipped with a 40sqm green chromakey cove and 50sqm chromakey floor with 12 fixed fluorescent panel lights, a curtain system, a tubular grid ceiling for spotlight installation, 80 power circuits (16 to 63A) with a total output of 110kW and various backdrops built in the craft workshops.

A multi-purpose room is attached.

Recording studio

The sound studio area comprises a 5.1 room (80 sqm) with a loudspeaker system from Meyer Sound and Yamaha in an arrangement for cinema mixes with a mixing console C|24 from Pro Tools and a projection system on a 6 sqm screen, a 5.1 room with Genelec loudspeakers in an ITU arrangement with an Avid S1/Dock mixing console and a 3D room for experimental mixes in three levels up to 14.2 (incl. Dolby Atmos, Auro 3D etc.) with Genelec and Adam Audio loudspeakers.

All rooms offer the option of digital editing with Pro Tools Ultimate or Nuendo and have access to an extensive sound archive on a NAS system.

If required, tape machines in DAT, DTRS, ¼" and Perfo formats can also be provided.

Video editing

Seven workstations are available in the video editing area. They are equipped with iMacs or MacPros, HD-SDI monitors or 4K monitors (32"-65"), local RAIDs and audio interfaces (RME Babyface). The following software is mainly used: Adobe CC, Apple FCP X and Compressor, Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools, BMD Davinci Resolve. All rooms are acoustically optimized.

Two rooms are also set up as a color grading suite in terms of lighting and equipment (with BMD Davinci Resolve Studio and Easy DCP).

All video editing and sound studio rooms are connected to a central SAN storage (Ardis DDP RAID, net 60TB) via 1GbE or 10GbE lines.

If required, VTRs in Digibeta, Betacam SP/SX, HDV and DVCAM/DV formats can also be provided.

Cinemas

Video and film screenings are possible in the 220-seat auditorium (45 sqm screen, Barco HDX-W14 WUXGA projector with DCP workstation, Betacam multi-format and Blu-ray player, 35mm/S16/16mm film projector with plate system from Kinoton, 5.1 surround sound system with 5.4kW output from JBL, Midas, Datasat) or in a cinema room with 40 seats (7sqm screen, WUXGA projector Barco RLM-W8, 5.0 surround sound system).

Lending & Reservation

Students can borrow the equipment from the film workshop after making a reservation, and from there they receive access to the film studio, for example. Klaus Hommerich instructs the students on the function of the loan equipment and Jörg Steinebach on the technical equipment. Both provide assistance in the event of problems with the technology. The film workshop is also responsible for the maintenance and repair of the equipment as well as for the planning and installation of the technical facilities.
