Target group of prospective students

Are you looking for a training structure with an apprenticeship and a degree course? Then this dual study program offers you a wide range of options and opportunities.

Latest news

In the winter semester 2021/22, Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts will launch its new Bachelor's degree course "Medical Informatics Dual". In terms of subject matter, organization and structure, it is based on the experience of the "Medical Informatics" study program, which has been running successfully for 25 years.

The outstanding feature of both study programs is both their broad range of content, given by the two classic main specializations "Informatics in Healthcare" and "Informatics in Medical Technology", as well as their high degree of application orientation. The dual study program also has a high degree of practical relevance, partly due to the two learning locations of the company and the university, as well as the dual qualification in the form of the professional degrees "IT Specialist" and "Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)".

"At Fachhochschule Dortmund, computer science students on the dual study program are particularly satisfied with the general study situation. They rate the supervision, support during their studies, the range of courses, the organization of studies and examinations as well as equipment features such as rooms and IT infrastructure very highly. They are very well supported at the beginning of their studies."

Why a dual study program in computer science?

Dual study programs are becoming increasingly popular with both prospective students and companies. They combine a university degree with in-company training and place a stronger focus on practice-oriented learning.

This dual study program offers students particularly great opportunities and potential because

  • academic training and company practice are closely interlinked.
  • it offers a dual qualification (IT Specialist IHK and Bachelor of Science) with an individual specialization
  • students get to know company practice at an early stage and take on responsible tasks during their studies.
  • they train important key qualifications both in the company and at the university.
  • graduates of dual study programs have excellent career prospects and are usually taken on directly by their training company.
  • their living expenses are covered by the company salary and the company pays the semester contribution.

Why study Medical Informatics DUAL?

In healthcare, enormous amounts of heterogeneous data are generated every second from a variety of heterogeneous sources, such as laboratory, diagnostic and billing data, as well as signal, image, genome and study data. In order to live up to the promise of optimal patient care with simultaneous cost control, a high degree of digitization must be achieved, not only in data generation, but above all in its further processing, analysis and networking.

Computer science provides general methods and tools for mastering these tasks, such as software and system architecture. However, in order to do justice to the great complexity of healthcare systems in general and medicine in particular, further specialization and in-depth study is required, with medical informatics making an important contribution with content such as medical basics, information systems in healthcare, as well as telematics and telemedicine.

At the same time, building on a solid mathematical education, medical technology is covered with content such as diagnostic and therapy systems, visualization and interaction, as well as signal and image processing for medicine.

Building on these technical foundations, a further specialization in machine learning, data science and artificial intelligence or deep learning can take place.

Together with a high degree of application orientation and practical relevance in seminars, project work and final theses, medical informatics specialists can use their qualifications to help turn unrelated data into targeted information and ultimately valuable knowledge to significantly improve the structure, process and outcome of healthcare.

Practice cooperation with cooperation partner

The Medical Informatics DUAL (MI-DUAL) study program cooperates with numerous partners in the region (catchment area NRW). The main feature of the dual study program MI-DUAL is the continuous practical cooperation throughout the entire course. In all phases of your studies, there is a transfer from theory to practice, which is reinforced by numerous projects.

You can choose a dual practical cooperation via the job market , the list of cooperation partners  or by recruiting a new cooperation partner.

Job market

Fachhochschule Dortmund offers job advertisements from cooperation partners in the job market for prospective students. If you cannot find a suitable vacancy in the job market, you can apply directly to individual cooperation partners.

Cooperation partner

You will find a list of cooperations below. Not all cooperation partners are included in this list. In the list of cooperation partners, you will find a breakdown of cooperation partners according to the training or specialization they offer in conjunction with a degree course.
