Women's project lab

Fachhochschule Dortmund was one of the first universities to set up a women's project laboratory to enable female pupils, applicants and students to work creatively and independently with technology and to provide them with ongoing support in this area.

Whether in computer science, energy management, electrical engineering, automotive engineering or mechanical engineering, women are generally still only marginally represented in such technical professions.

That is why our aim is to make young women and girls aware of technical careers and bring them closer to them.

Women often have a negative attitude towards the STEM subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology), as they tend to be associated with the male gender.

We want to dispel this prejudice!

The Women's Project Lab has therefore focused on two main projects:

  • Firstly, we try to get schoolgirls interested in a wide variety of STEM fields at an early age through playful experiments in our laboratory.
  • Secondly, we network female students from technical degree courses with each other so that they can support each other with regard to upcoming exams and everyday student life in general. We are also currently building up a network of companies from the STEM fields so that we can provide our female students with contacts for internships or final theses.

The women's project lab is therefore a place,

in which female students...

  • network in order to master everyday study life.
  • help and support each other in a friendly environment.
  • make contacts with companies.
  • be informed about a wide range of topics relating to STEM and studying at our regulars' table.

The women's project laboratory is also a place,

in which schoolgirls...

  • gain an insight into various technical courses of study.
  • Carry out experiments to get to know technology in a playful way.
  • Have questions about studying answered by female students.

  • Space for around twenty pupils or students
  • several laptops
  • various experimental setups from a wide range of STEM fields (e.g. Lego Mindstorms NXT, Fischertechnik Green Energy construction kit, fuel cell car)
  • projector
  • Specific literature from the field of women and technology
