Information
Once a semester, the Social-Philosophical Salon brings together all social disciplines, including philosophy, to exchange ideas and discuss a common topic of the Faculty of Applied Social Studies .
How can social work benefit from Judith Butler's work?
This edition of the Salon focuses on the question of how social work can benefit from Judith Butler's work.
Judith Butler is a feminist philosopher and influential theorist who was born in Cleveland on February 24, 1956. Her socio-critical writings focus on the relationship between the subject, the body and power. "Many of the themes in Butler's work, such as social recognition, diversity, vulnerability, ethics, gender justice and non-violence, are invariably concepts that social work deals with and that need to be updated again and again."(Schrievers 2024(Opens in a new tab) , p. 9).
Prof. Dr. Carla Schriever as a guest
Prof. Dr. Carla Schriever(Opens in a new tab) is a guest at the Summer Salon. In her publication"Judith Butler - Ein Praxisbuch für die Soziale Arbeit(Opens in a new tab) ", she has shown how social work can build on Judith Butler's work and will illustrate this using the concepts of vulnerability and betrayability.
The organizers are looking forward to combining theoretical and practical perspectives together with Carla Schriever.
