Children's University of Applied Sciences: When Pipes Sing—Sound You Can See and Touch

Sound is all around us—but we can’t see it. In this workshop, we’ll make the invisible audible and visible: Using simple tubes, we’ll build and tune our own musical instruments, which will begin to sing as soon as we swing them through the air. The faster you spin them, the higher the notes you’ll produce—and by the end, the whole group will play a real melody together.

Using professional measurement equipment from our acoustics lab—from a special microphone to an “artificial head” to an acoustic camera—we’ll suddenly see on the screen where a sound is coming from and what a sound really looks like. This way, we experience firsthand how research is conducted at a university and why technology helps us understand the invisible world of sound.

Target audience: Children ages 8 to 12

Capacity: maximum 100 children (parents may accompany their children)
