Mobility Campaign: Everything About Bikes & More
Mobility shapes our everyday lives—and in this issue, we have three pieces of good news for everyone who gets around on campus and in the city:

  • Road Safety Training for International Students
The CSR Office, TU Dortmund’s Sustainability Office, and the ADFC are once again hosting a safe cycling training session—designed for international students who already know how to ride a bike but are not yet sufficiently familiar with traffic rules. After the theory session, participants will put what they’ve learned into practice on a short bike tour through the city. The event is part of Sustainability Week Plus.
  • Donkey Republic: Ride for Free in the Ruhr Metropolis
With Donkey Republic’s student rate, you can use bikes throughout the Ruhr Metropolis:
Student rate: 60 minutes free per ride, up to 3 bikes at a time. After that, €0.50 per 3 minutes
Daily Rider (subscription): Up to 60 min. per day for €5.00/month (or €7.50/month, depending on the minimum term)
  • New bike parking facilities at EFS and MOP
There are two new lockable and weather-protected bike parking facilities at Fachhochschule Dortmund (12 spaces each):
EFS Campus: between EFS 42 and EFS 44
MOP Campus: in the gated parking lot in the inner courtyard (the barrier has been shortened—access is possible without a key)
A transponder can be lent at the gate upon presentation of a student ID. Use of the bike parking facilities is free of charge and subject to availability; that is, spaces cannot be reserved or assigned. E-bikes may only be parked on the lower level (max. 28 kg; upper level: max. 18 kg).
    Here’s how it works
    1. Open the bike locker
    2. Pull out the rail
    3. Slide the bike in
    4. Lock the bike to the bracket
    5. Push the rail back in
    6. Lock the bike box

Energy-Saving Campaign “Together, Less…”
The energy-saving campaign will take place from November 2026 through March 2027 under the motto “Less Together….” In addition to the booths at the university’s various locations, this year’s focus will be on the digital clean-up and building inspections.
The Digital Clean-Up saves energy by deleting duplicate or unused data from servers and other devices.
The building inspections allow us to check for issues such as faulty thermostats, drafty windows, rooms that are too cold or too warm, lighting, or the need for motion sensors. Building users are involved in this process to ensure that specific details and individual needs are not overlooked.
You can find us on the following dates, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the following locations:

  • Nov. 3: Emil-Figge-Straße (Kostbar)
  • December 1: Sonnenstraße (cafeteria area)
  • January 12: Emil-Figge-Straße (Kostbar)
  • February 2: Sonnenstraße (cafeteria area)

Lecture Series on Sustainable Development in the Winter Semester 2026/27—come check it out! How can we balance climate, Business Studies, and social cohesion? This question is at the heart of the Sustainable Development lecture series. This winter semester will cover a wide range of topics. Faculty members from the Fachhochschule Dortmund will discuss the UN Sustainable Development Goals, using server waste heat for heating, sustainability in theater, housing of the future, green behavior in human resources management, and energy-efficient buildings. To kick things off on October 21, our Climate Protection and Energy Management teams will showcase what the Fachhochschule Dortmund is doing itself to combat climate change.
The program is complemented by the NRW-wide online series “Gemeinsam nachhaltig” (Sustainable Together) from the Sustainability Alliance. There, other universities will present their perspectives—for example, on volunteer election workers as pillars of democracy (Oct. 14), on structural change in the Rhineland mining region, or on how AI can support sustainable urban development.

Fachhochschule Dortmund at the IGA 2027—join us! From April 23 to October 17, 2027, the International Garden Exhibition will take place in the Ruhr region under the motto “Zukunft.Blüht.” One of the main venues is the Dortmund Future Garden surrounding the Hansa coking plant in Huckarde. And the Fachhochschule Dortmund is right in the middle of it all.
In our university garden, we’ll demonstrate how the university’s research and teaching contribute in concrete ways to a sustainable future: from a digital greenhouse with an autonomous robot to sensor-based young tree irrigation and projects from the Faculty of Design. The centerpiece is our construction trailer “Soffi,” which is accessible to everyone.
    Your Event at the IGA
The space isn’t just an exhibition area—it’s meant to be filled with life. All university members, whether students or staff, can host their own events there: seminars, workshops, field trips, project presentations, or hands-on activities. Do you have an idea? Get in touch!
