Classism at "Talk im U"

Published

The latest edition of the "Talk im U" series at Fachhochschule Dortmund dealt with the topic of classism. For organizational reasons, however, the venue was not Dortmund's U, but the spacious lecture hall A101 on Sonnenstraße. A recording is available on this page.

In a lecture lasting just over half an hour, guest Prof. Dr. Aladin El-Mafaalani, author of the book "Mythos Bildung" (The Myth of Education), among others, first presented what is associated with the buzzword "classism" in connection with inequality of opportunity in Germany. The nationally renowned sociologist sees two challenges for academics with a comparatively low social status of origin who also have a history of migration: on the one hand, the "top-bottom difference" specific to classism and, on the other, the "inside-outside difference" typical of migrant families. Aladin El-Mafaalani explained what this means for expectations of loyalty and expectations.

The lecture was immediately followed by a panel discussion with Aladin El-Mafaalani and Prof. Dr. Tamara Appel(Opens in a new tab) , Vice-Rector for Teaching and Studies at Fachhochschule Dortmund, as well as a student from the Faculty of Applied Social Studies(Opens in a new tab) .
