The arts in crisis

Published

The coronavirus pandemic has left deep scars on the arts and culture sector. With the first lockdown in spring 2020, many common artistic practices that rely on presence were no longer possible. In addition, the pandemic and its consequences developed dynamically and unpredictably, exacerbating uncertainty and fears for the future.

The cultural scene has adapted: Terms such as hygiene concepts, living room concerts, hybrid events and streaming performances have become a natural part of the vernacular.

Online discussion series in the winter semester 2021/2022

In the winter semester 2021/2022, the online discussion series "The Arts in Crisis - Virtual Table Talks" was held at the Faculty of Applied Social Studies.

In this format, social work students interviewed prominent representatives from the arts about their experiences and strategies during the coronavirus pandemic and about future prospects. The interviewees included Thomas Oberender (director of the Berliner Festspiele), Andres Veiel (film director) and Doris Uhlich (dancer and choreographer).

Twelve social work students were involved in the project. The event was coordinated and carried out by Marcel Böcker, Donya Rad and Prof. Dr. Christoph Lutz-Scheurle(Opens in a new tab) .
