DoIT! Day of IT!

Published

(Re)immersed in computer science

Finally "doing" on site again! At the "DoIT! Day of IT" on May 20, 2022, the 80 pupils from grammar schools and vocational colleges in the region finally had the chance to immerse themselves in the world of computer science for a day. In interactive workshops, the prospective students were able to explore and try out the diverse topics of computer science study programs. The aim of the offer was to present our university of applied sciences and provide insights into studying at the Faculty of Computer Science.

The current edition of DoIT! once again featured a whole range of topics from the computer science study programs. For example, the students learned the basics of Android app development in practice-oriented workshops on the classic game "Break Out". In another workshop, they were able to explore 3D medical worlds and clarify the question of what computer science has to do with medicine. There was also the opportunity to develop hardware under supervision - for example, their own smart LED lamp, which they were allowed to take home, or a traffic light controller on a microcontroller (Raspberry Pi). A short presentation by the student advisory service provided initial information on how to get into a degree course.

"From our experience in recent years, we can see that the DoIT! participants perceive Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts as a possible place to study," say Fernanda Nunes Trautmann and Rusudan Schulenberg, research assistants and mentors at the Faculty of Computer Science. "Every year, we see familiar faces among the first-year students who have previously attended the Day of IT."

Good to know: DoIT! is planned to take place in this format again next year.
