The new pavilion in Fredenbaumpark is to be built from natural materials that are already used in the maintenance of Dortmund's green spaces, easy to erect and flexible and barrier-free to use. Bachelor students from the Faculty of Architecture at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts developed 17 unique designs based on these specifications, the three most successful of which were awarded prizes on September 16, 2022.
The "PARKHAUS PARKRAUM PARKBAUM" project is a collaboration between the Parks Department and Fachhochschule Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts with the aim of equipping Fredenbaumpark with a new building for the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) 2027. This building is intended to be a home for the boat rental service and at the same time offer flexible spaces for events. The project was supervised by research assistants Guido Kollert and Laura Wiederhold.

Ideas come to life
Prof. Dr. Tamara Appel, Vice-Rector for Teaching and Studies at the University of Applied Sciences, praised the project as particularly application-oriented at the award ceremony on site: "You have created a shell out of clay that you fill with ideas," she said, addressing the students. "These ideas are coming to life here in Fredenbaumpark."
Not an easy task
Dortmund's Head of Building Arnulf Rybicki was also impressed by the students' creativity. "Designing a sustainable building that can be erected with very simple means and at the same time opens up many possibilities for park visitors is no easy task. The results are all the more amazing. I'm really looking forward to when the pavilion is finished and adds another special feature to Fredenbaumpark," says Rybicki.
Construction project for international garden exhibition
The building should be ready for the IGA 2027. The students will largely do the construction themselves, but the staff of the Parks Department will of course be on hand to help. To avoid having to buy the necessary natural building materials such as wood and clay at high prices, the students will receive them from the Parks Department. The materials are needed for daily maintenance anyway.
