To remain available as a place of learning and for the use and lending of media for as long as possible, the library will be open without staff at all three locations starting in the late afternoon. The concept is called “Open Library” and ensures that users can visit the library even when no staff members are on site.
The initiative will initially launch at the Max-Ophüls-Platz location. Since the start of the 2026 summer semester, opening hours there have been significantly extended. For the first time, users can now visit the library at this location on Saturdays as well.
Important: Lending keys at the gate
Since an automatic door cannot be installed at the library entrance at the Max-Ophüls-Platz location due to historic preservation regulations, you must borrow a key with a transponder from the front desk after service hours end (see below for more information) in exchange for your signature. You can use this to unlock the library. If you are already inside the library when service hours end and would like to stay, you do not need to pick up a key. Groups of several people need only one key; one person from the group then assumes responsibility by signing for it.
After your visit, simply close the door behind you; there is no need to lock it. Return the key to the front desk.
