The library at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts - working where others learn

Hello!

If you would like to become part of our team, you've come to the right place to get a first impression of us, our work and our premises. Of course, anyone who is simply curious about what goes on behind the scenes can also take a look at this page.

Here you will find answers to the following questions:

  • What do we do all day?
  • Can I also do my apprenticeship here?
  • Can I also apply as a career changer?
Welcome to the library!

We are a small, open-minded and energetic team that is always ready to take on new challenges, in which individual ideas and opinions, interests and skills are encouraged and supported. We live the "Duz" culture in our team. The work in our library is very varied, which is why we need to think outside the box and have a sense of organization.

This is how it looks with us

Our library locations

Our three libraries belong together, even if they are physically separated. However, they are quite different because each location has a range of media tailored to the faculties, individually designed rooms and its own atmosphere. We are not only a point of contact for students, but also for teaching staff, university employees and external users.

Location Emil-Figge-Str. 44

Location Sonnenstraße

Location Max-Ophüls-Platz

This is how we listen

In one of our podcasts, a colleague explains what we do throughout the day and also dispels a few clichés.

Together with six colleagues, we recorded another podcast in which we talk about the stages a book goes through from purchase to loan.

We would like to produce even more podcasts in the future - perhaps with your voice too?

Education

In 2019, our former trainee media and information services specialist (FaMI) talked about her day-to-day work for a video on the topic of "Training at Fachhochschule Dortmund".

Our colleague Barbara Jacobowsky(Opens in a new tab)  will be happy to answer any further questions on the subject of training

Our plus points

  • Varied work
  • Weekly free fruit basket
  • Regular team meetings
  • Independent work

Can I also apply as a career changer?

Media and information services specialists, librarians and IT specialists work in our library. However, with the appropriate qualifications, it is also possible to apply as a career changer - some of our colleagues come from the book trade, archive and office communication sectors.

We currently have no vacancies.

Why do I like working in the library at Fachhochschule Dortmund?

Some colleagues tell us:

"I have different tasks, which I particularly like! It means that my day-to-day work never gets boring. What's more, my colleagues are great and I can design my own workspace with plants and pictures: I feel very comfortable here overall!"

- Johanna Munkelt, Librarian B. A.

"I like working in the library because you can move more than just books with a cool team and modern equipment."

- Georg Wisniewski, graduate computer scientist

"What I enjoy most is dealing with the students and lecturers, because no two days are the same due to the constant stream of new questions, requests and suggestions. I can give free rein to my creativity at any time, as there are always new tasks to do or new ideas to look for. The best thing about my job, however, is that some of my colleagues have become friends."

- Melina Harhoff, specialist for media and information services

"I particularly enjoy my work because paper is patient ;-) Nevertheless, the job offers a lot of variety, especially when dealing with suppliers and students. I like being part of the team because I can rely on my colleagues and always receive support."

- Silvia Wiesemann, formerly in Business Studies, now a commercial employee in the Acquisitions department

"I like being head of the Fachhochschule Dortmund library because I have a committed team behind me that is open to new ideas and where we treat each other with respect."

- Mario Hütte, a geographer in his first life, a librarian in his second

Our video tours

When we were unable to offer library tours in summer 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, we filmed video tours of our libraries. In them, we present the most important areas and services - primarily for our students.

Please note: Some of the services presented there are no longer offered.

We look forward to receiving your application and getting to know you personally.
