Faculty of Computer Science

Hardly any other discipline has undergone such rapid development in recent years as computer science. Based on many years' experience, Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts can offer the students a well-founded and practical education in various courses and fields of computer science.

After learning the basics in networked systems and the recent programming languages like (Java,C#, C++), the students can focus on software engineering, information systems, multimedia, hardware engineering or robotics. There is also a particular degree course for medical computer science.

Although the university department Computer Science has one of the extensive studies offer of the whole Federal Republic, the supervision of the students is one of the most important concerns. The faculty offers each student small study groups, small lap groups and counseling interviews with a mentor.

The Faculty offers for all its Bachelor Programmes consecutive Master Programmes. Additionally we offer a master's degree in Embedded Systems for Mechatronics, taught in English, and a master's degree in Digital Transformation, taught in English.

International students are more than welcome as the faculty is still searching for new international cooperation. There are a couple of courses taught in English. Because the number of English subjects is growing it is best to contact the international coordinator to get an up to date list of the subjects.

Applied Computer Science (Practical Computer Science)

Bachelor of Science (6 semesters)
In the first two semesters an introduction in Computer Science is taught. The students learn the basics of theoretical Computer Science and the basics of computer architectures and operation systems. With teaching the modern programming languages like (Java, c#, c++) a
perfect entrance into programming is given.
Later on the students are able to immerse themselves in subjects like software engineering, information systems and multimedia.

Master of Science (4 semesters)
The Master of Applied Computer Science supplements the Bachelor with aspects of an occupation in leading positions such as project manager, software architect and It-Consultant.
Subjects like project management, design pattern, component based systems, and distributed and mobile systems are taught.

Computer Engineering (Technical Computer Science)

Bachelor of Science (6 Semesters)
In the first two semesters an introduction in Computer Science is taught. The students learn the basics of theoretical Computer Science and the basics of computer architectures and operation system. With teaching the modern programming languages like (Java, c, c++) a perfect entrance into programming is given.
Later on the students are able to immerse themselves in subjects like hardware engineering, software engineering for technical systems and robotics.

Master of Science (4 semesters)
The Master of Applied Computer Science supplements the Bachelor with aspects of an occupation in leading position such as project manager, software architect and It-Consultant.
Subjects like project management, real-time systems and telematics are taught.

Medical Computer Science

Bachelor of Science (6 semesters)
The assignment of information technology is an important factor of success in the modern health care system. Modern, it-based documentation and information processing is required for an optimal medical treatment of the patient. For analysis, for the implementation and for the operation of the software medical computer scientists are needed.
In the first year the basics of Computer Science, Medical Computer Science and humane medicine are taught. The students learn modern programming languages like (Java, c#, c++). Later on the students are able to immerse themselves in subjects like medical information systems, company management in health care or digital image processing.

Master of Science (4 semesters)
The Master of Medical Computer Science supplements the Bachelor with aspects of an occupation in leading position and scientific activities. Subjects like It-Management, formal languages, bio-system analysis, virtual medicine or medical methodology are taught.

Business Computer Science

Bachelor of Science (6 semesters or 7 semesters with industrial placement or as part time degree 9 semesters)
In the first three semesters an introduction in Computer Science and Business Computer Science is given. The students learn subjects like Human Resource Management and organisation, business economics and Java. Later on the students are able to immerse themselves in subjects like logistic management or business management.

Master of Science (3 or 4 semester or as part time degree 5 semesters)
The Master of Applied Computer Science supplements the Bachelor with aspects of an occupation in leading position such as project manager, It-Management and It-Consultant. Subjects like advanced project management, business intelligence or It-Controlling are taught.

Software Engineering Dual

Software Engineering Dual (Bachelor of Science 9 Semester)
is a combination of studying and a training for young people with interests in current technology, methodical and analytical procedure and being a team
player.

Unless otherwise stated, the language of instructions is German!

Should you be interested in enrolling in a Study Programme with German as the language of instruction you will need to have proof of German proficiency on an B1 level in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
